Baking French Macarons

I feel like I went thru hell and back for the past two weeks.

If anyone has tried to make french macarons, you know that they are very temperamental to work with.  Yes, they require simple ingredients of almond powder, powder sugar and egg whites. Looks easy right? But they’re not  Sometimes they crack, sometimes they’re undercooked.  And sometimes they just don’t have those cute little feet (I think they call them “pied” in French).

But I’m proud to say that I finally perfected them

My dad-in-law (who is a pastry chef) was actually surprised that I was able to make them this past weekend. His words of encouragement after passing thru the baking test (as translated by my husband) – “Don’t buy anymore macarons.  You can now make them on your own. Great job!”  Of course, I gave him credit for helping me a  bit on how to create the meringue and showing me how to create the circles using the piping bag.  The rest of the time was mostly trial and error on my part based on the YouTube videos and reading material online.

I’ve made three different types of french macarons this past weekend.

One is red velvet with cream cheese buttercream filling:

The second flavor is green tea macaron with the same cream cheese filling:

And the third flavor (which is my favorite) is the tiramisu macaron with mascarpone buttercream filling:

With the holidays approaching, I’ll be making a good amount of macarons to give as gifts  These little suckers are pretty expensive to buy outside, though.  Most places that I’ve visited usually charge anywhere between $2.00 – $4.00 per macaron.

The Nespresso Cafe that my husband and I visited was pretty quaint. When we asked for the macarons and how much they cost, we were flabbergasted when we heard the prices – 3 macarons for $8.00 and 6 macarons for $12.00!

Yes, we did cave in buying the macarons over there.

We also visited a bakery place located in 25 Murray Street called Takahachi Bakery.  Very cozy and their macarons were much lighter to consume.
